Bakchar

BACKGROUND

Utter Bakchar is a very poor, remote farming village near Bangladesh’s capital, Dhaka. The monsoon rains that arrive between June and October produce over 80% of the area’s rainfall, making the community vulnerable to snakes, insects and other dangerous and disease spreading animals.

GOAL

Replace a dilapidated school with a facility capable of housing education, healthcare and microfinance initiatives.

Bangladesh offers few education opportunities to its children and national literacy rate hovers near 48 percent. Utter Bakchar School, founded in 1991, provides free primary education to more than 300 students from several poor local villages, but has become worn down over time during many rainy seasons.

PROBLEM

Local townspeople do not have the financial resources necessary to rebuild the structure.

Without new facilities, the students and villagers who depend on the school will not be adequately protected from dangerous weather and wildlife.

SOLUTION

Construct a new schoolhouse and community center using funding from The Posterus Foundation.

We worked with the International Relief Friendship Foundation (IRFF) to build a new schoolhouse for first through fifth grade students in Utter Bakchar. The new building – constructed on high ground and made of brick – will be better able to protect the hundreds of students and villagers it serves.
