GOAL

Education in an impoverished land.

We are dedicated to helping educate the people of Tobati, Paraguay. Tobatí is both a town and a provincial district with a population of 21,315 of which 16,538 (75.5%) are under the age of 19.  More than 70 percent of Tobati’s people live on less than $2 a day. We aim to improve the learning environment through the improvement of the current facilities, the construction of new facilities, and the hiring and training of staff to improve literacy in the community.

PROBLEM

School needs funding to build classrooms.

Nine different rural grade schools in the district of Tobati have inadequate classroom capacity, and are in need of extra space, desks and chalkboards.

SOLUTION

Team Tobati XL

The team, made up of students and alumni from Kingswood Oxford High School, will be in Tobati building additional classroom space for Escuela Basica 3906 “Maestra Telma Salvioni de Cabriza” in the poor rural village of Mompox, Tobatí. This school currently runs through the 6th grade.  Students upon finishing the 6th grade are forced to walk over a half hour to the nearest middle school. Primarily because of this, less than 10 percent of the Mompox students continue their education after the 6th grade.  The additional classroom space will allow the school to offer a 7th grade this year—and an 8th grade next year.

PROBLEM

School destroyed

Farm of Hope is struggling to meet the needs of these children.  A majority of the makeshift schoolhouse was destroyed by adverse weather conditions, and now many of the orphans have been forced to study under the protection of only trees.

SOLUTION

Rebuild school. Start sustainable food and healthcare programs.

The Farm of Hope, run by Floribert Kazingufu (Flory) is seeking to build a schoolhouse and sustainable food and healthcare program. Plans include six classrooms, a clinic, a kitchen, a technical skills center for older children and administrative rooms for teachers and management.  Thus far, volunteers have compiled a budget for the first installment of three classrooms.
