BACKGROUND

Kiliba is a small town near the border of Burundi in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kiliba continues to feel the effects of the Congolese civil wars that began in 1996 and lasted formally until 2004, drawing in eight of the country’s neighboring countries and leading to the deaths of some 3.8 million Congolese. Read more about the conflict in the Congo here: http://www.globalissues.org/Geopolitics/Africa/DRC.asp . The town of Kiliba faces extreme problems in terms of poverty, orphans, widows and street children.

GOAL

Education and Healthcare in a war-ravaged country.

Our target is to provide a nurturing, education-focused environment for the civil war orphans of the small village of Kiliba.  They have emerged in a new place of peace and reconstruction.  Let us give them a Future.

PROBLEM

School destroyed

Farm of Hope is struggling to meet the needs of these children.  A majority of the makeshift schoolhouse was destroyed by adverse weather conditions, and now many of the orphans have been forced to study under the protection of only trees.

SOLUTION

The Farm of Hope needed a new schoolhouse and the tools necessary to start a vocational school to give students a brighter, more productive future.

The Farm of Hope, run by Floribert Kazingufu (Flory) was seeking to build a schoolhouse and sustainable vocational school program that would train students in carpentry and related skills. Plans included six classrooms, a clinic, a kitchen, a technical skills center for older children and administrative rooms for teachers and management.
